"Saki Comeback"
Oh yeah, this series is completely and unabashedly batshit. More please.
It's always a surprise to see what Valvrave has next in store, considering that the series seems to try to outdo itself in terms of sheer insanity every week. Everything about this series is larger than life, and Saki is no less ridiculous than the rest of the crazy hullabaloo we're offered every week. I do admit that her personality this episode caught me off-guard somewhat; somehow she struck me as more straight-laced and responsible than she's turned out to be, though she's not necessarily an unpleasant character because of it. She's a bit more on the wrong side of the psycho scale than I bargained for, true, but you can't accuse this series of being boring, no matter what bizarre weirdness is happening on stage.
As it turns out, Saki's not as interested in Haruto as she is in the potential he offers to help her strike it big in the entertainment business; though she's a retired idol, she still hopes to become famous enough to escape her parents' abusive upbringing, something she jokes about with Haruto despite being the truth. Whatever her mental scars, she deems them painful enough to eagerly give away her humanity in order to become an "immortal vampire" and set her debut as a hero alongside Haruto. She even steals his body and takes it on a joyride for the sake of bettering her standing (and marketing herself as his younger sister), and if that's not enough to place her on the psycho list, she then goes out into battle without taking any heed from any of the other students or Haruto himself.
Luckily for Saki, there are genuinely kind people like Shouko around who will stand at her side even when it seems like she's stealing Haruto away. Though I originally preferred Saki to Shouko, I'm starting to find that Shouko is the generally better person in the equation (and certainly a little bit clearer in the head than Saki), and without her encouragement it's doubtful that Saki would have gotten through the battle with Dorssia after falling victim to her own hubris. Of course, this is all well and good, but has no one realized that they've let a Dorssian super-spy loose in their new independent country and that no one really knows what he's been up to for the last few episodes?
N.B.: Thanks to Ivan for the caps!
