Damn, Hakaze. For a "sheltered" and "lovesick" girl, you can certainly kick some ass. Not that we didn't think you could.
Zetsuen is back in full swing this week, and the amount of information given us is almost dizzying. Many of our preconceptions are suddenly not on as sound footing as we had hoped, and everything seems to be spinning out of control.
Mahiro finds himself in the company of Samon upon waking from his coma, and several other familiar faces are present in his new faction, including Evangeline, Nakamura, and Takumi Hayakawa (the ex-government agent). Samon is no longer attempting to revive the Tree of Exodus, but he has another concern now that the Tree of Genesis has become the dictatorial entity controlling the world: Hakaze is falling in love, and with none other than Yoshino.
Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but there are some details about Yoshino that make Samon think he has the potential to be the Mage of Exodus. For one thing, his existence didn't exactly help the Tree of Genesis come back to power, as he complicated matters when Mahiro could have brought Hakaze back on his own. For another, Hakaze is faltering in her conviction that the Tree of Genesis has helped the world, and she's letting Yoshino's opinion hold quite a lot of sway over her decisions. That effectively puts the fate of the world in Yoshino's hands, and the Tree of Genesis would supposedly never let that happen willingly. So where exactly does that place Yoshino? We can't say with certainty, because while Yoshino's presence may not be following the Tree of Genesis' wishes, there's also that little matter about Megumu Hanemura (Yuki Kaji), the young man who actually shows the ability to use magic derived from the Tree of Exodus.
Coincidentally, (or not; there are no coincidences in Zetsuen), Yoshino and Hakaze come across Hanemura at a train station, where Hakaze kicks him for no reason other than unease and they end up treating him to lunch. Hanemura doesn't seem to be a killer, however, as his whole reason for trying to get to the Tree of Exodus is to impress his ex-girlfriend. He's a bit of a softy without much spine to his name, and it's a long shot to think that he's someone who spreads chaos, even though he does display the abilities of a Mage. Even in the fight between himself and Hakaze, Hanemura is terrified to think he's injured Hakaze, even when she herself is completely unfazed and cool about it all (I would be too, if I had the power to regrow my arm). It complicates matters, because now both Yoshino and Hanemura have some attributes that could implicate them as mages, but neither are fully confirmed. There's almost certainly something even greater lurking behind the scenes, but for the time being, we'll have to accept Hanemura as the Mage.
The dramatic irony of the series has never been higher, now that Hakaze has fallen in love with Yoshino. I wasn't aware that Hakaze didn't know about Aika and Yoshino, so now that she's interested in him, she's under the mistaken impression that he has a living girlfriend. In fact, everyone except Evangeline thinks so, and Samon and Mahiro even strike up a deal over the girlfriend's safety. Hell will certainly break loose once the truth is out, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mahiro tried to kill Yoshino with his own hands, even if he and Samon don't think Yoshino capable of having murdered Aika. We can't really be sure that he didn't though, because we only have Yoshino's word for it that he didn't kill Aika, and for all we know there may have been some circumstance that led to her death at his hands. I'm still leaning toward the idea that Aika is far more important than we've given her credit though, and I don't think she's done being the center of attention just yet.
