Sorata no baka! At least you managed to apologize in the end.
After what Sorata did to Mashiro last week, I was sad to see that she apologized first and that he ignored that heartfelt attempt to make up. I can understand that Sorata is upset (though his anger here is forced and out of character, for the most part), and that Mashiro simply didn't want to fight, but Sorata really was unfair to her both times and it took him much too long to realize it.
But I digress; the failings of romcom heroes are standard, and while forced, there was a ring of proper melancholy for everyone in Sakurasou this episode. Sorata is depressed at his own shortcomings and the projection of his hopes onto the changing Mashiro; Mashiro is upset because she doesn't understand why Sorata is angry; Nanami wants to confess to Sorata but knows she doesn't have much of a shot, so she puts all her hope into their Christmas date; Ryuunosuke seems to be feeling lonely without Rita; Misaki hopes to finally get through to Jin; and Jin is being an incomprehensible assface about Misaki. We get an inside look at everyone's thoughts which is a nice little change of pace, though not everyone is making a whole lot of sense this time around.
Sorata aside, I can't pretend to know what the heck Jin thinks he's doing. On the one hand, I can understand that he feels he isn't good enough for Misaki and her talent, and that he has some sort of inferiority complex because of it, but it also makes him come off as unbearably sexist sometimes. There's this feeling that he doesn't think he can "provide" for her, and while I may be reading into this a bit too much, I don't see why he can't just let her love him for the sake of loving him, rather than "making her love" him. If he's feeling down about himself, then he should just work harder; there's not much point in crushing her love for him though, except in boosting his ego, at least the way I see it. It's sad seeing Misaki getting turned down by that kind of logic; she doesn't love Jin because of any of the logic he thinks he needs, she just does, and to some extent I think he's simply running away from her.
At least Nanami makes a bit more sense, even if I'm rooting against her all the way. There's nothing wrong with Nanami, but she's not very interesting and she's been fighting a losing battle against Mashiro since day one. Her Christmas date and February confession plan are a bit of a metaphorical suicide mission; she knows she's almost out of the picture, and she just wants to get some time with Sorata before it's too late. Her confession plan may be flawed, but perhaps getting it off her chest after succeeding at an audition is the best way for her to gather the courage for what she must know is a rejection. At least the episode didn't focus on her fawning over Sorata or whether or not he waivers over her; it was really just a simple night out and it left room for all the SorataxMashiro stuff to take center stage.
It'd be nice if Sorata took the hint and realized Mashiro is in love with him, because even after the completely unbelievable obliviousness he displayed last week, Mashiro basically confessed to him this time and he'd be a fool not to see it. Whether he's not ready for it and is choosing to ignore it is another problem entirely, but perhaps this is clear enough for him not to confuse her change for "slacking off" anymore.
Their reconciliation was at least sweet, if not a bit overdramatic with all the fountain water and lights in the background, and Sorata has reason to look forward to the future, now that he's been granted another presentation and the eccentric (but very prettily dressed) Mashiro is officially looking his way. They really should hurry up and go out though; they were never in doubt as a pairing from the moment they met. We'll have to wait, however, because next week we seem to be going to Sorata's home for the New Year, where his sister Yuuko awaits (shudder).
